As Legal Counsel you will be part of the Group Legal team supporting Virya and its subsidiaries both in Belgium and internationally. You will be contributing to the day-to-day follow-up of legal matters with a strong focus on the Business Unit GRID Solutions and the Energy Retailer DATS 24.
You will be responsible for:
Translating energy regulations into clear, practical advice for the business, and you will provide legal support by drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of commercial and energy-related contracts.
Providing legal support to operational teams in the development, financing and operation of renewable energy projects, with a particular focus on securing land tenure, collaboration contracts with other developers, supporting with renewables tenders and obtaining various administrative authorizations and building permits. Providing legal advice to operational teams on urban planning (permitting), real estate, environmental, energy, contract and commercial law.
For the GRID Solutions Business Unit, you will assess the legal feasibility and ensure compliance of renewable energy production and commercialization projects in Belgium.
Assisting with resolving appeals against administrative authorizations or any other disputes that may arise in the context of the development of renewable energy projects in Belgium and abroad.
You will also assist the new C&I Business Unit in the development of behind-the-meter projects involving among others solar energy production, battery storage and EV charging infrastructure.
You will assist with:
Notarization support: Liaising with notaries, coordinating the signing process, reviewing published deeds, and ensuring proper scanning and archiving of documents.
Legal documentation and coordination: Managing communication with law firms and drafting legal notes and documentation for both legal and non-legal teams.
Regulatory monitoring and compliance: Keeping up to date with relevant legal and regulatory developments and ensuring the group’s operations remain fully compliant.
Internal documentation and board support: Preparing internal legal documents and presentations for senior management and/or the board of directors.
Legal audits and contract management: Supporting legal audits and assisting in the organization and maintenance of standard legal templates and intercompany agreements, including service level agreements.
Dispute resolution and litigation management: Assisting in the handling of legal disputes, negotiating settlements where appropriate, and coordinating closely with external counsel when necessary.
Job requirements
A Master’s degree in Law is required.
You have 4 - 7 years of relevant professional experience, ideally in urban planning, environmental, energy, or commercial law, gained at a reputable law firm or within the legal department of an energy company.
Fluency in Dutch or French, with the ability to work and draft in the other national language as well as in English.
A proactive, solution-focused mindset combined with strong attention to detail.
Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining a clear overview.
Strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills, with a natural ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
A high level of integrity and a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
Analytical thinking and the ability to grasp complex legal and business issues.
To be eligible for this role, you reside in Belgium and hold a valid work permit.
